Food debates, mangled bicycles and hungry mice...

For the last eight months I have been on what I called a 'veganic locavore' diet; a bit of a precursory experiment to my year without money. It involved me eating nothing but organic, local and vegan food, with the aim of having as gentle a footprint on the environment as I thought I could.
Whilst it was quite a strict regime, it did mean my diet was full of food packed in both flavour and nutrition. So this week (I’ve been eating a lot of waste food) has come as a bit of a shock to the palate. Instead of my usual freshly-baked-from-organic-hand-milled-flour bread, I had a loaf of Tesco’s finest white, packed full of those highly informative E numbers and lots of thin air.
Which leaves me in two minds – I do believe that skipped food has a lower environmental impact than even the local veganic green alternative – the former destined for landfill, the latter still having some oil and energy embodied in it as you pull it through the supply chain. However, it also isn’t very healthy, and given the fact that I really believe that food which is full of pesticides and artificial preservatives has played a big part in the increase in crime, aggression, violence and the lack of care and respect for life today, then the debate is not as simple as it first seems. My theory by the way involves applying quantum physics to the old adage, recently corporatised by Gillian McKeith, which states that ‘you are what you eat’, and it does show very similar trends in the rate of increase in factory farming and the rates of increase in crime and mental illness. Well, I suppose you are eating tissue which is storing a lot of pain, anger and stress at the point it was killed, which then inevitably becomes your own tissue.
At the end of the day growing all your own – or swapping the stuff you have an abundance off – is the ultimate, and what I want to work towards. Skipping is merely an interim solution, a transitional food supply. By its very nature it is unsustainable – people keep telling me that it’s pointless as six billion people cannot do it. Given the critical meteorological climate we are in, I think that until not a ounce of good food gets wasted, we have an obligation to use up what is there, whilst educating ourselves on how to grow our own and forage in the longer term.
What I really can’t understand though is why anyone would buy something like that! For those of you who claim that it’s cheap bread, it’s actually not. It is, quite literally, expensive oxygen.
The weather hasn’t made things any easier in my first week – just to illustrate, I got up to wash the dishes yesterday morning at 6am as you do, only to be thwarted by the fact the water that was in the sink (which is outside) overnight had frozen. It also means I have to light a fire most evenings, which not only really eats into my time but also means my fresh produce goes off that bit earlier as I haven’t got a chilled fridge. Couple that with the fact I have to cook outside on the rocket stove and that we’ve had torrential rain, it could have been a bit easier! Necessity is, as they say, the mother of invention though, and to save time, fuel and a wet head, I’ve taken to cooking two dinners at a time.
But hey, that’s what winter in the UK is all about – desiring a green countryside and moaning about the rain is no less contradictory than a government dedicated to both reducing carbon emissions and expanding airports. And anyway, a fresh December morning in Somerset is a very beautiful thing.
I’ve already had my first scare however – an injury to the extension of my body that is called my bicycle. Last Friday at 6.05pm, five minutes after the last point in which I could pay to get my bike fixed, I got a puncture to my back tube. Not a problem in itself, although wheeling it three miles home with two heavy laden back panniers did make me worry about damaging the wheel.
I did, however, have a manic day, with the fact of the media catching wind of my current experiment adding huge pressure to what was always going to be a stressful day. By the time I got home I was exhausted and still had loads to do, and so while chatting to Fergus about the free feast on Saturday I detached the gear box instead of the wheel! Now I’d no idea how a gear box on a bike worked – anytime it had problems in the past I brought it to the bike shop. But if I didn’t get it working I was going to be severely handicapped from day one, though I was pretty sure I’d be able to find a bike-fixing freeconomist within a week max anyway.
With the help of Fergus I managed to get it functional again, though until today I was cycling a very handicapped bike on 56km round trips. As you can imagine, not ideal. So I woke up this morning determined to fix it. Two hours later, for what would be a 10 minute job for a mechanic, it was working again. Frustrating as it was, it illustrates a major point of this year for me – having no money is going to force me to learn all the stuff I used to pay for – when survival is at stake, your ability to learn is quickly intensified. And instead of paying for a load of evening courses, I’m blending education into my ‘whole life’, in contrast to the ‘work life’ and ‘private life’ I used to have.
I’m also currently having a game of non-violent chess with a mouse, who like myself, is rather found of the bit of food I have. I can’t blame him really. I thought he had me in check, but after a lot of rearranging and shelf building I think he is now on the back foot. I think to kill another sentient being over a little bit of food is the ultimate in selfishness, especially as we humans have messed up their natural environment so much it has forced him to live of my food in the first place. Just because his face looks different to mine doesn’t mean he should die – we white males once used to discriminate (and still do to a degree) against those whose skin was a different colour and whose genitalia were different. When are we going to learn that ‘speciesism’ is the logical next thing to tackle after sexism and racism?

When I lived in a tent at university for a year mice became my best friends - no really! At first I cursed them then came to love them. Storing muesli in the tent was the initial problem. One time I went away for a week only to return and find 5 different mouse holes artfully crafted around the outside of the tent and ALL my muesli eaten. I stuffed up the holes with newspaper and socks but the mice were determined and just made new holes. Initially I decided to get around the problem by hanging all my food in a tree. That didn't work because the birds took a fancy to it! The final solution though was excellent as it become my nightly entertainment - much better than TV. I stitched up all the holes in the tent except one. Then I cut a 1.5 l plastic lemonade-type bottle in half and jammed one end tightly in the hole from inside the tent - sticking out an inch or so on the outside. The inside portion I connected to one of those large screw-top plastic sweet jars that shops often give away. Basically, every few days, I would put a generous supply of out-of-date grains and nuts from the local wholefood shop in the jar and screw the lid on. At first the mice came tentatively and shyly, the slightest movement from me and they'd disappear. After a month they where unfazed by being observed under full touch beam even if I was noisy and moved about. Over the year I came to know a large family of wood mice and no further holes were ever made in the tent. Happy days!!

Re: why someone would buy that horrible bread... well, the sad thing is that quality bread costs more & there are people who genuinely can't squeeze out more from their budget to pay more. I don't mean people who moan about having no money & yet somehow go on ski trips every other weekend in the winter (charging the cost of it all), or people who say they have no money but have a zillion channels to watch on their large TV. Although even for those people, you have to wonder why they are happy to pay so much for entertainment on TV & yet are determined to get their food as cheaply as possible (apparently this is a British thing; I recently read the book Bad Food Britain which talks about this a lot). I'm sure lots of people have been food-brainwashed into thinking horrible white bread is actually substantial & what tasty bread should taste like tho'!

Yeah I agree with most of what you've said. People have been brainwashed to believe that cheap white bread is *normal*.
The sad reality is that one loaf of good wholemeal organic fresh bread is nutritionally better than over two loafs of the supermarket stuff.
Cheap bread is an illusion - and add to the fact it's costing our natural environment, and hence us in the long term, and costing the buyer's health, then it definitely isn't cheap.

Were you vegetarian/vegan before you started this experiment Mark? And if not, how was the transition? I'm a meat eater, but it's one of my biggest battles of conscience with myself.
Your 'rocket stove' sounds intriguing! And I wish HTML was allowed in these comments ~ I'd send you a photo of my own homemade oven! Basically a 12" X 9" (approx) trench in the ground with a slate tile bedded into the base; a 'wall', made of two housebricks along each side with two more across the back; a sheet of steel grid from somewhere (?!); more brick walls, and a slate tile roof. It's neat! We scuttle hot coals from our fire into the trench, and that oven gets HOT! At first we were just messing about with baked potatoes and other simple stuff, but a few weeks back I managed to bake a cake in it! :D 'Green tomato cake', using up toms from the garden that had been frosted out and were otherwise destined for the compost heap. Great cake! Worked havoc with the system though, hehehe. :)
Well done on sorting out the bike yourself. Necessity is a great teacher, eh?
And I'm pleased the mouse got away with its life. My online 'handle' is mousepotato66, so it's good to know that there's no danger in visiting here. ;)

If you are really veganic I would love to know more about that. I thought it was nigh on impossible to be completely vegaic - or to even know how most of the plants you are eating were grown!

I grew up in war time ! We kids knew wild food well.We did our own bike repairs , we ate rabit ,and ,if we got it, game birds .we had wood fires .you can cook potatoes (homegrown) in the ash ,and slow cook meat stew in a haybox .vegitarianism is impractical .To grow food succesfully you need partnership with nature ,the eccosysten works best if run in a natural way . look at nature ! Top of food chain eats lower down . Just think , frog spawn ,all those tadpoles,we'd be overcome by frogs ! But newts , fish, ducks ,hedgehogs etc. eat them , bigger preditors then eat those , and so on .What makes you better than those creatures ? you should try living on war time rations .Without livestock,the countryside would revert to forrest ,we'd loose the flora and forna we know . Could you live in a forrest environment ? Possibly a jungle , if global warming progresses ?
By the way , mice cant eat meusly in glass coffee jars , and recycled plastic sheets keep the rain off the cooking area . We didn't have that luxury
