Video of Living without Money talk at the Bank of Ideas
| 13 comments |
A couple of weeks ago I gave a talk, at the Bank of Ideas in London, about living without money. It was the first time I gave that particular angle to the talk, and it is one that much more accurately represents my perspective on money now.
If you weren't there but are still interested to watch it, Charlie Veitch kindly filmed it and spent days uploaded it (thank you Charlie) to his YouTube channel, Fadedglorytimes. It is in eight parts, and you can either watch them by using the link above or clicking on the links here: part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7, part 8. (Q&A starts about part 6 I think).
Nick Rosen, the author of How to Live Off-grid and founder of the Off-grid website, was also there and gave a talk before me, and we done a Q&A together at the end. For those of you who want to know more about Nick and off-grid living please do check out either his book or his website for more information. Here is what he had to say about the talk.
To all of you who did come, I'd just like to say thank you for a fantastic day and evening, it was a pleasure to meet you some of you at the end. Do feel free to share the links to the talks, as due to my workload for the foreseeable future my ability to do more talks is going to be very limited (more about that in the next blog).
If you have any thoughts on the talk - regardless of whether you agree or disagree, found it useful or absolutely useless - do also feel free to leave any comments below, as it really helps me reflect on the truth (or falsity) of the stories I tell myself and refine what I talk and write about. Voicing our perspectives is how we co-create the stories of our future.
THE FREECONOMY BLOG is written by Mark Boyle, who lived for over two years without money, and is the founder of the Freeconomy Community. He is the author of The Moneyless Man.

Finally finished watching the whole video. It was reassuring to hear you focus on some deep ecology ideas. I agree with you that unless people can make that connection between themselves and the living ecosystem around them that in some way a link is missing. It is only by making this connection that living a new way will make sense and give ultimate fulfillment. I've not read Eisenstein's Ascent of Humanity so thank you also for the heads up on that. Will definitely put it on my list and it looks like the whole thing is readable online. Even better. Thanks again.

Hi Mark, yes I watched all 8 videos (thanks Charlie for making it possible), I was transfixed, really inspiring. I understand your perspective of coming from oneness with nature. My life was changed or rather honed by reading the Ringing Ceders of Russia series, read them if you can Mark, I think you'll like them. These books are in alignment with your approach to life. Thanks again for your talk I was inspired, also great to see so much going on in the UK, I'm in Greece and moneyless living is becoming a hard frightening reality for many. It would be wonderful to inspire a graceful, intelligent way of living without money here. Miracles can happen :)

thanks Mark, I found it very inspiring and easy to listen, easy in the sense of it making sense! Totally agree about not going over the practical issues, most of which are obvious and can be adapted accordingly. As for the crapping bit, yes it is awful that we are putting this stuff into the water system, I also getting very concerned about the amount of chemicals being put into the system for the sake of "coloureds keeping their colour/brighter washing lines etc!" I don't buy them myself, but I realise how little effect my rejection of these has when I stand in the queues at the supermarket, plastic bags with a slice of potato with chemicals of salty and various flavours in in them, ready cut vegetables, even sliced apples all wrapped in oil based materials because we believe we do not have time to cut and peel an apple or boil and mash a potato.
It is an illusion, and I totally agree that first of all we need to recognise this illusion before we can move on into a moneyless system.
There are, as you point out, limitations for some of us, but these can be overcome with adapatations and community.
The sooner we understand that money is an illusion and that we have the means to survive without it, as we did way before the romans blessed us with the start of the illusion, then the sooner we can have a healthier planet and happier planet.
Many thanks, keep up the good work Mark.

Mark,
I enjoyed watching your talk on Youtube, thanks. I thought you and others would be interested in some excellent talks that are being given at the Royal Geographical society this year. They are available online; www.21stcenturychallenges.org
e.g. the future of capitalism, plastic in our seas, global health, water shortages, 'going green' etc. Many talks given by very interesting people. Some tinged with optimism, others less so.

The link I gave in the last comment had gaps so clicking on it wouldn't take you straight to the video. So hopefully this try will. One thing to add is at the beginning when it says we share the same dna as the tree a better way if looking at it is that all life is cell or cells! Simply we are life we are nature we are earth. So when we trash earth we trash ourself, though we maynt feel it at the time.

Dear Mark,
I am watching your talk on You Tube and it is very good. I read your blog - which I think I may have seen some time ago and it made me laugh out loud.
Well, thank you. for saying some stuff very well that I have been thinking about and about writing today.
I particularly like your points about money as another way of making us thing that we are separate.
I am very glad to have come across you and what you are saying is making a lot of sense, thank goodness.
I will continue to listen to your talk. And hopefully speak again.
With respect and laughter
Emilie
