No.2 - Satish Kumar

From Gandhi we flow quite nicely to a man called Satish Kumar. A Jain monk as early as nine years of age, he eventually left monkhood and joined the Gandhian movement, where he met a man called Vinoba Bhavé, who had set up the amazing Bhoodan movement. Vinoba was Satish's guru for many years and this clearly had a profound effect on the pupil's life.

I first came about Satish Kumar a few weeks after I decided to go on my pilgrimage from the UK to India without money. A friend who had just heard about what I was about to do sent me a copy of an amazing book called 'No Destination' by Satish, and so I thought I best give it a read.

I couldn't put the thing down. The book spoke not only about the amazing physical external journey he went on in the 1960's and thereafter, but just as importantly his internal journey through life. His insights into life are moving and you cannot read that book and be the same person afterwards.

His other books include 'You are, therefore I am' and 'Spiritual Compass', and in the university of life both are marked as essential reading.

During the summer I had the pleasure of meeting him in Schumacher College. It was from things that came up in this conversation that eventually gave birth to the Freeconomy Community, an idea that I had first had five months earlier, though unknown to him.

Satish, however, is not just a pilgrim and an author. He's also editor of Resurgence magazine, set up both the Schumacher College and Small School and is what I would call a 'reverential ecologist'.

The timing of this piece is designed to coincide with a programme on BBC2 (UK only) tonight and repeated on Sunday called Earth Pilgrim. If you have a TV and want to find out more about this amazing man, then I would highly recommend it. If you don't have a TV, call around to a friend, play some music or read a good book!

If you want to buy a house, you will have to receive the mortgage loans. Moreover, my mother usually takes a small business loan, which seems to be really reliable.
